“Life Is Good” was presented by The RI Cross Disabilities Coalition team of Tanja Blicker-Ucran, Christina Battista and Kevin McHale, where the focus was on independence, productivity, self-determination and inclusion. Each member of the team took turns exploring one facet of the topic, sharing what it meant to them personally. Approximately twelve attendees plus the support staff agreed that these facets are what makes life good.
Tanja began by explaining the value of self-determination – of being in control of her life, doing as much as she can, and making her own decisions. At the same time, she acknowledged – and all agreed- that it is important to take responsibility for the choices she makes. Christina talked about productivity – her work life and her community involvement. Kevin discussed the importance of integration and inclusion, meaning that having friends with and without disabilities, working in groups with both those with and without disabilities contribute to making a good life.
Working on behalf of things that matter to us led to a discussion about advocacy within the Cross Disabilities Coalition, and led to an open invitation for all participants to join their meetings
Being accepted, being involved, being listened to – are all things that help people gain independence, confidence and a happy life.
