The RI Cross Disability Coalition held its meeting today at the Warwick Public Library, bringing together a lively and engaged group of advocates and community members. After reviewing the organization’s mission and the minutes from the September meeting, attendees shared an enthusiastic “wish list” of future topics, including mock job interviews, pet therapy, travel opportunities, and celebrating community heroes.
This month’s featured presentation focused on Self-Defense and Internet Safety, led by Officer Mike Matracia, a former Providence Police officer with 35 years of experience, now living with MS and serving on RIDDC boards, and Christina Battista, Cross Disability Coalition founder and current staff member. Together, they guided the group through a PowerPoint presentation that was both practical and interactive, sparking personal stories and lively discussion throughout the afternoon.
Officer Matracia emphasized the importance of using “proportionate force” and the power of communication and favoring de-escalation in difficult situations. “I’m not about a lot of force,” he explained. “De-escalation and discussion are key whenever possible.” Participants discussed various types of defense: verbal, physical, and emotional, and agreed that staying calm and setting clear boundaries are essential to staying safe.
Christina highlighted the value of awareness and confidence: walking with confidence, paying attention to surroundings, and trusting your instincts. Members added their own insights, from using body language effectively to carrying tools like pepper spray, flashlights, or alarms.
The conversation then turned to online safety, where nearly everyone had a story to share. Topics included recognizing scams and phishing attempts, managing cyberbullying and harassment, and avoiding sharing personal information. The presentation’s key takeaways:
- Block and report suspicious activity.
- Talk to someone you trust
- Use safe browsers and apps to protect your privacy online. Christina mentioned specific apps and browsers
With the Powerpoint slide used as a springboard for conversation, participants also discussed creating personalized emergency plans and preparing emergency kits with medications, devices, and supplies. Other forms of safety were on the agenda, as well: home safety through ramps, grab bars, and clear pathways were on the list.
The meeting offered much information and much for the participants to consider. Whether in person or online, awareness, communication, and trusting your instincts remain among the best defenses.
