The event, which brought together 15 participants, began with introductions and updates. Some attendees have been employed for a long-time in their positions, while others are actively seeking work, but all came ready to share perspectives and learn from one another. Relationships impact every aspect of life.
The discussion started with a simple but powerful question: What does a relationship mean? Participants mentioned connections with co-workers, friends, family, neighbors, and significant others. One participant reflected that even within
the Job Club, they experience “respected and trusted relationships.”
From there, the group explored what makes relationships healthy. Ideas that came from the conversation included:
- Respect and self-respect – treating people as people, not objects
- Choice – needing to make sure you share choices, versus only one decision maker
- Trust – dependable, helpful, and something that takes time to build
- Teamwork – working together, giving space, and supporting one another
- Safety and comfort – feeling secure and cared for
- Growth and happiness – healthy relationships help us flourish
Participants also reflected on unhealthy relationships, meaning those that don’t feel good for body or mind. Through stories and examples, they noted the importance of recognizing red flags, knowing when to speak up, and having at least one trusted person to turn to for support.
The group discussed friendships, too, how they form through work, school, or shared interests, and the different ways friends can feel like family. They shared honest thoughts about how to handle relationships that change over time or become unhealthy, emphasizing communication and choice.
The interactive session included a “thumbs up/thumbs down” activity to help identify positive and negative relationsh
ip behaviors. The conversation was lively, thoughtful, and full of real-life examples, with participants asking important questions and reflecting on their own experiences.
And, Spurwink’s director, Mary Anne Maciel provided Job Club meeting participants with community-building over food… pizza and carrot muffins which everyone welcomed at the start.
The afternoon was a reminder that whether at home, in friendships, or in the workplace, healthy relationships are built on respect, choices and trust. And, conversations like these help us all grow stronger together.
